This piece was inspired by the Animal Band prompt in the Character Design Challenge.
My mother is Puerto Rican, and many of my family members live there. We were lucky enough that every other Christmas we were able to spend a few weeks there to celebrate Christmas, the New Year, and Three Kings Day. Needless to say, we had a lot of parties!
It's been a long time since those days, and so much has changed. Still, I hold fond memories of warm nights, Merengue music (my family's preferred style), and chasing tiny lizards through my grandfather's farm. I always enjoyed playing the Guiro; a hollowed-out
gourd with groves along the side. Sound is made by scraping it with a metal "comb". I must have thought it was easy to make a sound.
So here is my little reptile girl, in a Puerto Rican style traditional dress, dancing at sunset at the beach.
